Archivo General del Ministerio de Asuntos Esteriores, 1860-1877, libros 354, 355 and 356, authorization given to three Spanish citizens. Authorization has continued to be given in the present reign, see resolution of the Jefe del Estado Mayor del Ejército, 22 January 1997, published in the Boletín Oficial de la Difesa, permitting Comandante de Infantería D. José-Antonio Crespo-Francés Valero to wear the decorations of the Order; by resolution of the Under-Secretary of Defence of 20 October 1998, authorization was accorded to Comandante Auditor D. Fernando García-Mercadal y García-Loygorri, published in the Boletín Oficial de la Difesa, number 2210, of 28 Octobre 1998.

From 1961 onwards the Grand Chancellor of the Royal Order of San Hermengildo acting until 1975 in the name of the Head of State, and from 1977 in the name of HM the King, has invited HRH the Grand Master to appoint representatives of the Order to attend the bi-annual ceremony of the Royal Order at the Monastery of the Escorial, along with the four Spanish Military Orders of Santiago, Calatrava, Alcántara and Montesa, the Order of Malta and the Order of the Holy Sepulchre.

In 1983 HM the King commanded reports on the succession to the Grand Magistery of the Order from th Istituto Salazar y Castro, the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Council of State; these bodies concluded unanimously that the legitimate Grand Master of the Order is HRH the Infante D. Carlos, Duke of Calabria (see PUBLICATIONS section).
