Nobile Prof. Mario Arcelli

Nobile Mario Arcelli, a descendant of an old Northern Italian family originally from Piacenza, was born in Milan on 21 May 1935.

A full professor of economics since 1967, he was chancellor of LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome for ten years (1992-2002). From1995 he was a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, one of the world’s oldest academic institutions. In 1973-74 he spent one year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) of Boston (USA).

In February 1996 he became Minister for Budget, Economic Planning and European Affairs of the Republic of Italy (Dini cabinet).

Mario Arcelli was for a decade a leading economic advisor to successive Italian governments. He served as Head of the Economic Affairs Department at the office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Italy between 1981 and 1983 (during Fanfani V and Spadolini I and II cabinets). He was also economic advisor to the Prime Minister in 1987 (Fanfani VI cabinet) and 1988-89 (De Mita cabinet). As such he was a member of the Italian delegation to five G7 summits, in Versailles (France), Williamsburg (USA), Venezia (Italy), Toronto (Canada), and Paris (France).

At the Christmas 2001 Holy Mass in St Peter, in Rome, Mario Arcelli read the address to the Pope as the representative of the Italian universities.
