The Deputation regrets to announce the death of His Eminence the Most Rev Augusto Cardinal Vargas Alzamóra, Archbishop of Lima, Bailiff Grand Cross of Justice of the Constantinian Order, on the 4 Septembar 2000 aged 77.

Born in Lima, Peru, on November 9, 1922, he entered the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and was ordained a priest in Spain on July 15, 1955.

Named on June 8, 1978 titular Bishop of Cissi, in 1982 he became Secretary General of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference, and on December 30, 1989, Archbishop of Lima.

In his pastoral work, Vargas Alzamora worked tirelessly as director of the Marian Congregation, and as spiritual director of young students, whom he often brought to visit the poorest slums of Lima so that they could be directly aware of what social injustice means.

Positions Cardinal Vargas has held in the Society of Jesus included: teacher of novices, Rector of the School of the Immaculate Conception, and Provincial Delegate for Education. He was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II during the Consistory of November 26, 1994.
