
The Royal Deputation announces with the most sincere and deepest regret the death of His Royal Highness the Infante Don Carlos of Bourbon-Two Sicilies and Bourbon-Parma, Duke of Calabria, Count of Caserta, Head of the Royal House of the Two Sicilies, Grand Master of the Constantinian Order and of the Royal Order of Saint Januarius, doyen of the Knights of the Golden Fleece, who has died peacefully after a long illness, on the afternoon of 5 October 2015 at the age of seventy-seven, at his beloved country estate, La Toledana.

His Royal Highness was born in Lausanne, Switzerland on 16 January 1938, the only son of His Royal Highness the late Infante Don Alfonso de Bourbon-Two Sicilies and Bourbon, Duke of Calabria and of Her Royal Highness the Infanta Doña Alicia, Princess of Bourbon-Parma. He was educated at Las Jarillas along with his first cousin, the future King Juan Carlos and then qualified as a lawyer at the Instituto de San Isidro, Madrid before completing a course in entrepreneurship and banking with the Chase Manhattan Bank. On his father s succession to the Headship of the Royal House of the Two Sicilies on 7 February 1960 he received the title of Duke of Noto and was appointed Grand Prefect of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George. At his father s death, aged sixty three, on 3 February 1964, he succeeded as Head of the Royal House of the Two Sicilies, Grand Master of the Constantinian Order and of the Royal Order of Saint Januarius, taking his father s title of Duke of Calabria. He also succeeded to the title of Count of Caserta, conferred on his great-grandfather, Prince Alfonso of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, by the latter s father, King Ferdinando II. He received the collar of the Most Illustrious Royal Order of the Golden Fleece from HRH the Count of Barcelona in 1964 and was doyen of the Order. On 16 December 1994 he received the title of Infante of Spain (by grace of the King).
On 11 May 1965 he married Her Royal Highness Princess Anne of Orléans, daughter of Their Royal Highnesses the Count and Countess of Paris; they had five children Princesses Doña Cristina (married to Don Pedro de López-Quesada), Princess Doña Maria (married to HIRH Archduke Simeon of Austria), Prince Don Pedro, Duke of Noto (married to Doña Sofia Landaluce y de Melgarejo), Princess Doña Ines (married to Michele, dei Marchesi Carrelli Palombi), and Princess Doña Victoria (married to Marcos Nomikos).
He was Grand Commander of the Order of Alcántara on 13 October 1986 and, following the death of HRH the Count of Barcelona, was appointed to succeed him as President of the Council of the four Military Orders on 25 June 1993 and later as President of the Patronato the Naval Museum. He received the Grand Crosses of the Spanish Orders of Military Merit (with White Distinction), Naval Merit and Agricultural Merit and was Maestrante of Seville, Zaragoza, Granada, Ronda and Valencia, Protector of the Royal Corps of the Nobility of Madrid, Member of the Royal Corps of the Nobility of Catalonia, and Member of the Confraternity of Santo Cáliz of Valencia. He was Patron-President of the Foundation of Military Orders of the Hospital of Santiago de Cuenca and for many years President of the Association of Hidalgos a Fuero de España.
He also served as President of the Spanish Confederation of Foundations, President of the Spanish-American Confederation of Foundations, President of the Spanish Committee Foundation of the United World College, President of the Foundation Fund for the Protection of Nature (FONDENA), Patron of the Foundation San Benito of Alcántara and Patron of the Banesto Foundation.
The Lying in State of HRH the Infante Don Carlos, Duke of Calabriain
The body of HRH the Infante Don Carlos lay in state today in the Royal Monastery of El Escorial, the coffin draped with the Spanish flag surmounted by the hat of a knight of Alcántara (of which Order he was Grand Commander) with the collars of the Golden Fleece and the Constantinian Order laid on black velvet cushions in front. He was attended by a rotating Guard of Honour composed of four soldiers of the royal guard, two priests, two Constantinian knights and two knights of the Military Orders (Santiago, Calatrava, Alcántara and Montesa).
The family of the Infante were seated in front, HRH the Infanta Doña Alicia (accompanied by her daughter, HRH Princess Teresa, Marquesa de Laserma), HRH the Duchess of Calabria, TRH the Duke and Duchess of Noto, HRH Princess Doña Cristina and her husband Don Pedro López-Quesada, HIRH Princess Maria, Archduchess of Austria and her husband HIRH Archduke Simeon, HRH Princess Ines (her husband Michele dei Marchesi Carrelli Palombi was unable to attend today), and HRH Princess Victoria and her husband Marcos Nomikos. HRH the Duke of Capua and other grandchildren of the Infante were also present. A large number of friends and members of the Orders attended through the day.
Their Majesties King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, accompanied by HRH Infanta Doña Elena attended and warmly greeted the whole family, as did Their Majesties King Simeon and Queen Margarita of the Bulgarians, who arrived shortly before King Juan Carlos. Earlier in the afternoon HRH Monseigneur Louis-Alphonse de Bourbon, Duke of Anjou, also came to pay his respects.
